Facts

Facts about handcrafted Jewelry:

Please note that as natural stones and freshwater pearls are used, some variations in size, color, and shapes occur. Because of this, some necklaces may vary slightly in length. Average lengths are 16”, 18” and 20”. Necklaces strung on SoftFlex™ or AccuFlex™, unless otherwise noted.

**Many, although not all, of the colored freshwater pearls used, are dyed using standard jewelry industry techniques. This is a permanent color change of the pearl nacre. Your pearls can last for many years with regular wear and care. All pearl sets will have a free ‘Pearl Care Guide’ & polishing powder. Please note that using any type of jewelry cleaner on your pearls will void all warranties.

Jewelry Terminology

14 Kt. G.F., 14k/20 gold, gold filled, gold overlay or rolled gold. All these terms indicate a product which has gold bonded to another metal, but not silver. A thin layer of gold (of the purity indicated, i.e. 14 karat) is bonded to a brass core using heat and pressure.

The 1/20 notation refers to the ratio of the gold layer to the brass layer by weight. In the case of 14k/20, the 14 Karat gold is 5% of the total weight. If gold is less than 1/20th of the total weight, the fraction must be indicated along with the gold purity (i.e. 1/40th 14 Kt. Gold Filled).

The gold filled wire and plate used in our jewelry is high quality. Gold filled items have a higher value than gold plated items, as the gold filled items have a measurable, layer of gold, not a microscopic coating.

All of the gold filled products we offer meet federal standards for quality and content and are nickel free.

Vermeil Vermeil is sterling silver plated with gold. The purity of the gold plating varies, generally it is 22 karat. As with all plated items, the plating will wear off if rubbed extensively.

When we use Vermeil in our designs it is placed so that it incurs the least amount of wear possible. This best ensures the longevity of your jewelry.

Plating/Plated Plating is done over a variety of metals.

We only offer plated items that we have designed and cast. These include gold plated Heraldic designs, as well as the reproduction Elizabethan, Tudor and other historical items.

All of our historical designs are cast of bronze, polished, and then plated with a heavy layer of gold. Finally, the gemstones are set, and the piece receives a final hand polish.

For any of the items we have designed ourselves we offer the option to have it cast in Sterling Silver and plated with gold. This gives a very period "Gold Wash" look to the piece.

Lab Created Gemstones Laboratory created or 'lab grown' gemstones, are high quality gemstones that are created using a variety of methods including Flame Fusion and Polysilicate-High temperature flux technology.

Lab grown gemstones have the same mineralogical make-up as their natural counterparts and they offer color, quality, and consistency at a fraction of the cost of natural stones.

The choice of natural or lab grown is always yours as we offer both options.

Treatments Many natural gemstones are treated to enhance their appearance and value. The treatment can be heating, oiling, dying, stabilization or irradiation and most are permanent.

All reputable professional Jewelers practice full disclosure regarding any known or suspected treatments of gemstones they sell. We follow that practice with all of the stones sold by the Royal Exchange Jewelers.

The Fine Print

Although AJ works hard to ensure the finest quality and artisanship on every piece made, inconsistencies occasionally occur. Workmanship on all fabricated or cast items is guaranteed. If you have a problem with your jewelry, please follow these simple steps to make this easy for everyone.

First: contact AJ to discuss your concern, how it can be resolved, and the best method to do so. Please do not just return the item, as our show schedule is full, and variable. If AJ is in your area, she may be able to repair your piece on site.

When returning an item, please include a note explaining the problem. The note should include a phone number or other method of contacting you immediately, as well as a return address so we can sent the item back to you.

Lost stones: smaller stones are generally replaced without charge. However, fees may apply for multiple stones lost, or stones that are large or unusual. If you have lost a stone and are unsure if it is covered, or have any other question, contact AJ.

Please Note: undue stress, or improper usage of jewelry will void all warranties, This may include, but is not limited to: Items put into garbage disposals; smashed with a hammer, or run over by a vehicle; items chewed on or eaten by a pet or child or used as an animal collar/leash; and items taken apart or “fixed” by a friend, child, or ex partner, among others.
